Hello Goodbye September

9/26/2013

The months seem to come and go and before I know it a whole season has passed without me journaling any bits of life. Well, autumn is my favorite time of year and I am definitely making sure I capture all of the good stuff.

September was full of little life moments that zoomed by quickly. At the beginning of the month my husband and I celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary. It will be 12 years together in November, so crazy. I love his soul more every year. He turned 28 a few days after that. We had a friend ask how old he was, and we both had to stop and think about it. We can never remember, and always seem to round up a year or two. I swear I feel like I have been 28 for years now, even though I am really only 26. "Wait, how old am I?" Why does this always seem to escape my brain completely. Does that ever happen to you? Thinking you don't have an age... just living life, numberless. Are we the only crazy kids who do this?

Bean also had a birthday this week. I do know her age, and she doesn't look 6 at all. Or as my friend Capree said, "Coco, you don't look a day over 4, honey". So true. And thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes, she had a great day. She wore her 'special occasion' Mattie & Margot collar that her Aunt Rachael sent her. Can I tell you how much I LOVE this collar? Rach is so talented at designing these little gems. The metallic bow buckle makes it perfect for birthday attire.

I usually take a photo of the little munchkin every year on her special day as a keepsake, so yesterday afternoon I grabbed a few shots of her lounging in the bedroom. Funny backstory on the photo below: Before I took her photos I went to the other room to get her a toy to play with to keep her amused. When I came back in the room I found her all propped up on the pillow, ready to pose for a photo. It made me laugh because it was so her, getting her lean on.

Another good memory made.

So who else is excited for October and fall? I am, even though we don't really get the beautiful crisp weather here in Florida like they do back home in Ohio. I'm still excited, and I'm looking forward to visiting this little pumpkin yard again too... and watching Hocus Pocus and Beetlejuice while I glitter pumpkins.

For the autumn and winter months, my husband and I have decided to plan out a seasonal menu of healthy meals. It's been really beneficial so far, it gives us a little bit family time amidst our busy schedules. We shop at our local market and prep everything in the kitchen together, which makes it fun. Since we hand picked all of the ingredients and tweaked the recipes to our personal liking, it's actually been oddly enjoyable to someone who is not a top chef master. Last night we had grain free, spicy red beet veggie wraps, slightly toasted. They were so delicious and totally hit the spot. Looking forward to making homemade ginger-carrot soup too. It will be my first time attempting that. Supposedly it's really easy with a vitamix. We'll soon see!

I have also been making these carrot appetizers a lot lately. I used cayenne + coconut oil instead of cumin + olive oil, and they have turned into our go-to snacking addiction. I am not a fan of cooked carrots at all, but I could seriously eat a whole pan of these myself dipped in hummus. So. Freaking. Good. Please make them, you'll thank me!

Adding to our new changes we have decided to reduce our hours of screen time. We don't realize it, but we are seriously in front of some sort of screen 24/7. We decided to remove the tv from the bedroom a few months ago after my husband read this article from his favorite blog, Becoming Minimalist. We even took it a step further recently and turned in our DVR box from our family room to help us cut down. There are really only a handful of shows we love anyway (yay for Revenge and Once being back on Sunday!) and I have set reminders for when all of those come on. We've also decided to put down the phones during meal time and after 9pm. It has been really nice and pretty freeing. It's giving us more 'us' time,  time to read, work on Pretty Fluffy projects, and enjoy the outdoors with Bean. Can't complain! What are your thoughts on cutting down on screen time?

More news:

Have you heard of Humans of New York? The book is coming out soon and I would love to purchase it. If you haven't checked out his cool photo stories yet, you'll be in for a treat. Completely eye opening, beautiful, and incredibly humbling. We pass people everyday and have no clue of their story. It definitely puts life into perspective.

Did you check out the DIY: Canine Wine Toppers I posted on Pretty Fluffy? Just incase you are feeling crafty... and thirsty.

I get to see Theo and his new family again this weekend, so excited! Also I'll be posting his full beach session in the upcoming week. Here is a preview. I just love these dogs.

Enjoy your weekend! x

Thanks for blogging again, I enjoy your writings and keeping up. You always have a perfect tid bit to share. P.S. I have to do the math on ages too, and don't get me started on why I can't keep up with the boys getting older :-)

  3. Wow Sarah I didn't realise we were the same age and have dogs the same age too! (Rusty will be 6 next month). Just thought I'd say happy birthday to Coco Bean - she seems very chilled out and happy in her photos - definitely doesn't look a day over 4 ;) I'm a little envious of your new healthy menu and reduced screen time. Although my husband and I don't have a TV in our bedroom, we definitely spend too much time looking at multiple screens. You might have just inspired me to change it up too! Hope you have a fabulous October :)
